HSUS's Best City For Pets

San Francisco has been named America's most humane city, thanks to its pet-friendly hotels, off-leash dog parks and other nods to animals. The Humane Society of the United States considered such factors as the number of fur retailers, the ratio of wildlife watchers to hunters and even the number of vegetarian restaurants in its rankings of the country's 25 largest metropolitan areas.

Seattle, Portland, Oregon, Washington, D.C. and San Diego followed San Francisco in the inaugural index.

The study also looked at the policies of federal lawmakers from the area, as well as the conditions of pets, farm animals, wild animals and animals used in entertainment.

San Francisco took the top spot in three of the 12 categories. New York, meanwhile, had three times the number of fur retailers per capita than the overall average for the cities. San Diego had twice the number of captive animals as the second-ranked city, Miami.
